A CONTEMPORARY DANCE CONCERT

'How Now Becomes Then' is a performance that contemplates the transition of the present into the past. With two bodies, three musicians, and two antique props, it explores time as a manifestation of movement; highlighting how each reality possesses its own rhythm and flow, interconnected in a larger choreography influenced by Istanbul's rich cultural history. The performance is actively touring in both Turkey and Europe.

concept and Thematıc

The work adapts our understanding of time from linear to a spiral, suggesting that past events continue to resonate in the present. Through dynamic scenography and evolving relationships between movement and space, the performance embodies the fluidity of memory, illustrating how recollections transform over time.

musıc

Our journey with How Now Becomes Then began in January 2024. Our rehearsal and composition period took place in the winter cold, during which we were constantly engaged in intense research and consultation processes to develop the sections of the work. Each section's unique performative needs informed how we approached making sound. In some instances, we improvised within a palette of predetermined sound colors, chosen to evoke a certain feeling or state of being; in others, we performed composed material.

Regardless, the most rewarding aspect of our collaboration was the simultaneous realization of the choreography and music, making the parts inseparable from the totality. In an interdependent flux, the composition of sounds influenced the temporal proportions and dynamic features of the choreography, while the dramaturgy of movement informed our sound palette.

A selection from an abundance of sonic material was made for detailed exploration. The delivery of the original text written for this work and the placement of the human voice within the soundscape were major considerations for us. Particular sounds of nature were directly drawn from the text, while others were inspired by, or associated with either the movements or the philosophy of the work. The variation, fragmentation, and distortion of these materials throughout the work allowed us to mirror the structure of the mind and memory.

The inherent elusive nature of a live performance and what remains after is a perfect reflection of what 'How Now Becomes Then' aims to convey. Sound is only one humble part of this bigger narrative, just as the work itself is a humble part of another much bigger narrative.
